Holocaust Memorial Day –
27th January 2026:
On HMD, which marks the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp, on 27th January 1945, we remember the six million Jews murdered in the Holocaust, and the millions of others killed under Nazi persecution, and in the genocides which followed, such as those in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.
We are physical neighbours to our Hebrew sisters and brothers who worship across the road, from St Mary on the Sea Church, in the Sir Moses Montefiore Memorial Synagogue.
The lights in St Mary’s will be lit overnight, as they are every year after the Easter Vigil in the Holy Night and after the Mass of Christmas Night, on Kristallnacht and on HMD, in remembrance and as a prayer that we will always uphold the dignity of each and every human being, for we are all made in God’s image and are equal in his sight.

“The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light.”
Jesus begins his mission not in a place of strength, but in Galilee a place of uncertainty and change. Fishermen are mending their nets, life is continuing as normal, and yet into this ordinary moment Jesus speaks an extraordinary invitation: “Come after me.”
Peter, Andrew, James and John do not have everything planned. They respond because they recognise the moment the Kingdom is close, and the light has already begun to shine.
This weekend, in his pastoral letter launching the new Diocesan Mission Plan, Bishop Patrick reminded us all in the Diocese of Nottingham that the Church is called not simply to manage decline, but to reshape itself for renewal, growth and mission.
Rooted in Encounter, Discipleship and Mission, this journey asks each of us to rediscover our part in Christ’s call to “Go, make disciples.” 
This Sunday’s Gospel reassures us that mission does not begin with having all the answers. It begins with listening, with courage, and with the willingness to take the next step, trusting that God will bless what we place in his hands.
Lord Jesus, you call us as we are and lead us by your light. Give us the courage to follow where you lead, the generosity to place our gifts at your service, and the trust to walk together as a parish on the path of renewal and mission. Amen.
